Ghana Atomic Energy Commission

(General Secretary - GSMP)

Dr. Issahaku Shirazu from a humble beginning and with hard work, has successfully acquired PhD in Physics, MPhil in Medical Physics and BSc in Physics and Computer Science with excellent knowledge in computer software design. He has also acquired wide range of theoretical and practical experience in medical imaging, including Ultrasound, CT, SPECT and MRI. His profound knowledge of theoretical and clinical practice, system analysis and engineering, data and image processing, as well as hands-on experience in modern medical imaging equipment and excellent knowledge in functional and anatomical imaging technique put him above his peers. Over the years he has taught as a teacher at various levels of education in Ghana educational system comprising the basic, secondary and the tertiary institutions all in an attempt to make available his knowledge to the youth in an efforts to train them for collective benefit to the society as a whole.

Currently, Dr Issahaku Shiraz is a medical physicist with Radiological and Medical Sciences Research Institute of Ghana Atomic Energy Commission and Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and had done several research works for a number of health institutions in Ghana as a Clinical Medical Physicist. Additionally, Dr Issahaku is a clinical research scientist, specialized in medical imaging, in the area of advance imaging techniques, diagnostic and therapeutic equipment design, quality control and calibrations, image analysis software, tomographic image reconstruction, signal processing and dose optimisation protocol designs.

As a professional and a clinical researcher, Dr Issahaku has acquired wide range of theoretical and practical experience in medical imaging. His current research interest is in the area of physics of diagnostic medical imaging systems, with respect to high-speed image acquisition reconstruction and compensation for motion. In addition, he has acquired practical and theoretical experience on MRI, PET, SPECT and CT imaging in relation to QC, Image Computing, Analysis, Visualisation, Dose Optimisation Protocols and Diagnostic Reference Levels for clinical application in Ghana and beyond.

Dr Issahaku specific goal is to research in new areas in other to develop new methods in instrumentation, which are used in medical practice and research with major and special focus on application of Physics, mathematics and computer science in Medicine. In the area of medical imaging including MRI, SPECT, CT, PET and related methods and how these procedures will benefit the radiation oncology processes. To achieve excellence that will be appreciated and striving to be among the best in research and clinical application for the collective benefit of humanity as a whole.

As medical physicist Dr Issahaku interest is in a broad field where basic physics is employed to understand the nature of biological systems, in particular those issues involving medical imaging procedure including; ionizing radiation imaging (CT, SPECT, PET) and nonionizing radiation imaging (MRI, Ultrasound), both in the application of medical diagnostics imaging for treatment planning procedure. Over the years he has also acquired wide range of theoretical and practical experience in medical imaging including Conventional X-ray, Ultrasound, SPECT, CT and MRI and its use in treatment planning procedure. His strong Physics and computer science background put me in a better position above his peers. Furthermore Dr Issahaku current research is in the application of the principles of physics, mathematics and computer science in the field of medicine in diagnostic medical imaging and its effect on therapy.

Dr Issahaku is currently the vice president of Ghana Federation of Allied Health Professions, deputy General Secretary of Ghana Society for Medical Physics and an Associate fellow of International Centre for Theoretical Physics. DR Issahaku is also the Chair for Professions Specific Committee and a consultant to Allied Health Professions Council. He has acquired a number of certificates in Teacher Education, Scientific workshops and seminars with ICTP, IAEA and a number of universities in Ghana. Dr Issahaku had all his Education with English as the Medium of instruction and can speak and write excellent English, basic French and Arabic.

Currently, Dr Issahaku has over thirty publications in peer review journals within the past five years, together with a number of technical reports and conference papers. All this in the area of radiology and oncology, in addition to four software developed for the collective benefits of the society as a whole. Finally, he has special skill in developing research activity and writing with excellent teaching skills with great impact ability.
