He earned a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Applied Physics with Environmental Science, graduating with First Class Honors from the University for Development Studies (UDS). His pursuit of advanced studies took him to the University of Aberdeen, UK, where he completed a Master of Science (MSc) in Medical Physics Computing, receiving Commendation through the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) and the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) Scholarship Award.

Furthering his academic career, Dr. Mumuni earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Clinical Physics from the University of Glasgow, UK, specializing in Neuroimaging and Psychological Medicine. His PhD was funded by joint scholarships from the Scottish Imaging Network: A Platform for Scientific Excellence (SINAPSE), the University of Glasgow, and the Sackler Institute for Psychological Research. These achievements highlight his dedication to advancing medical imaging technologies and their applications in clinical settings.

Beyond his formal degrees, Dr. Mumuni has earned certifications in Medical Imaging, Medical Statistics, and Clinical Practice, awarded by the University of Glasgow and SINAPSE. These qualifications further underscore his expertise in the field and his commitment to professional growth.

Dr. Mumuni’s professional career began during his National Service in 2006/2007 when he worked as a Teaching Assistant at the Faculty of Applied Sciences, UDS. In 2007, he was appointed a Senior Research Assistant at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS), UDS. His dedication and expertise earned him a promotion to Lecturer in 2014, during which he also served as the Coordinator of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) block titled “Perceptions, Consciousness, and Emotions” at SMHS. In 2016, he transitioned to the School of Allied Health Sciences (SAHS) at UDS, where he continues to serve as a Lecturer in Medical Physics and Biostatistics.

In addition to teaching, Dr. Mumuni holds the position of Academic Quality Assurance Coordinator for SAHS, ensuring high educational standards and fostering a culture of academic excellence.

Research and Academic Contributions

Dr. Mumuni’s research is primarily focused on the in vivo applications of quantitative medical imaging techniques, particularly in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Spectroscopy, X-ray imaging, and Computed Tomographic imaging. His interdisciplinary approach integrates principles of physics, mathematics, and clinical sciences to advance medical imaging technologies and their applications in healthcare.

Dr. Mumuni has also cultivated a strong interest in Applied Mathematics and Physics, which informs much of his research work. Additionally, he has presented more than 10 research abstracts at major conferences, showcasing his work to global academic and professional audiences.

Notably, he was a guest speaker at the National Scientific Conference and 122nd World Radiography Day Celebration in Kumasi, Ghana, where he presented on Clinical MRI Safety and Radiologic Ethics and Professionalism in Modern Healthcare.

Leadership and Professional Engagement

Dr. Mumuni is an active member of several professional organizations, reflecting his leadership and dedication to advancing the field of Medical Physics. He is affiliated with the Ghana Society for Medical Physics, the Ghana Science Association, and the Commonwealth Scholars and Fellows Alumni, Ghana (CoSFAG), where he serves as a Core Group member. He has also served as the Executive Secretary of the Convention for Biomedical Research, Ghana (CoBReG).

His leadership extends beyond professional organizations to institutional roles, where he has contributed to various committees and boards at UDS and during his studies in the UK. These roles demonstrate his commitment to fostering collaboration and driving institutional growth.

International Collaboration and Curriculum Development

A key aspect of Dr. Mumuni’s work is his involvement in international collaborations. He represents SAHS-UDS in the Ghana-Norway Collaboration in Medical Physics and Radiography Education Project (NORPART), a research and capacity-building initiative aimed at fostering academic and professional exchange between Ghana and Norway. Through his efforts, UDS secured the hosting rights for the project’s Summer School, an event scheduled to take place on the Tamale campus, bringing together participants from Ghana and Norway for advanced training in Medical Physics and Radiography.

Dr. Mumuni has also played a pivotal role in curriculum development. He designed and submitted a 4-year Bachelor of Science (BSc) curriculum in Medical Imaging Technology (BSc MIT) to the Allied Health Professions Council and the National Council for Tertiary Education for approval. This program, which was planned to commence in the 2018/2019 academic year, aims to address the increasing demand for skilled professionals in Medical Imaging.

As part of this initiative, Dr. Mumuni secured approval to establish a Department of Biomedical Physics at SAHS, which will oversee the BSc MIT program and later expand to include postgraduate studies in Medical Physics. His collaboration with the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) further facilitated the integration of clinical training into these programs. The Radiology Unit of TTH has approved the clinical aspects of the curriculum, ensuring students gain hands-on experience in professional healthcare settings.

Dr. Mumuni is driven by a long-term vision to establish an international research and training hub in Ghana dedicated to Medical Physics. This hub aims to inspire, mentor, and train young scientists in the field, creating a pipeline of skilled professionals who can contribute to advancing medical imaging and healthcare.
